INDIA BECOMES NO. 1 PRODUCTION HUB FOR HONDA TWO-WHEELERS

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has inaugurated the fourth assembly line at its Narsapura plant in Karnataka, India. With this expansion of 0.6 million units, Honda Two Wheelers India’s combined annual production capacity from all four plants- Manesar, Tapukara, Narsapura and Vithalapur-becomes 6.4 million units annually – making India the No. 1 production hub for Honda’s two-wheeler operation globally for the first time.
The production capacity of Narsapura plant increases to 2.4 million units and it creates global record as World’s largest and highest productivity plant of Honda. Honda said that the new assembly line in Narsapura takes its total investment in India to over Rs10,000 crore since 2001.
“Honda’s two-wheeler business spans more than 120 countries worldwide and India is leading the demand. In 2016-17, India alone contributed 28 per cent to Honda’s global Two Wheeler sales and became the No. 1 contributor to Honda’s two-wheeler business. The Narsapura plant will now produce 24 lakh two-wheelers annually. This makes the Narsapura the world’s largest two-wheeler plant for Honda and also India the No. 1 production base for Honda globally,” said Shinji Aoyama, Chief Officer, Regional Operations (Asia and Oceania), Honda Motor Company.
“Growing double the speed of industry at 19 per cent, Honda alone contributed 68 per cent to industry’s new volumes resulting in three per cent market share gain to ever highest of 30 per cent. While expanding leadership in scooter segment (59 per cent market share), Honda is now also the new No. 2 motorcycle brand in India,” said Minoru Kato, President and CEO, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Limited.
